[HAPPY BIRTHDAY [personal profile] likely_evil! The Family Castle are NPCs and not binding on any one muse, Sam is [personal profile] likely_evil.]

Kate knew this was a bad idea.

She knew the minute the words “oh but dear I insist” came out of Martha’s mouth. If Martha was insisting, it meant that she was really not going to take no for an answer. She was willing to bet that Alexis was the one who told her that Kate was engaged, but being told to bring your fiancé over to your ex-boyfriend’s house for some kind of giant dinner was never bound to end well. Especially when that ex-boyfriend was Castle.

As they made their way up to his penthouse, Kate tugged on Sam’s arm, yanking him back so that he was facing her. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea.”

Sam watched her for a moment, before raising an eyebrow. “I’ve met Castle before, Kate.”

“I know. I know you have. But when you met Castle before you met him as my partner, now … things are different. And you’ve never met Martha.”

“It’ll be fine. It’ll be like meeting the Flacks.”

“Not exactly,” she muttered under her breath. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Kate. I can handle it.” He leans down to kiss her softly. “Relax.”

She sighed heavily before nodding. “Alright. Fine. I’m relaxing.” She pulled back, leading the way up to the door, raising her hand to knock. She paused just before it hit the door, turning to face him again, and Sam beat her to the punch, rapping his knuckles against the door and flashing her a look. She pressed her lips together before nodding. “Right. Relaxing.”

The door was whipped open, and Alexis flashed them both a smile. “Hey. Dad, Kate and Sam are here!”

“Took them long enough. The dinner was about to get cold.”
Castle came around the counter of the kitchen a hot pan in his hand. “Come in, sit down! Let’s eat.”

Dinner up until this point had been mostly silent. There was the occasional small talk points, but for the most part, people were keeping to themselves. Eyes darted around the table, looking for someone to break the silence. Eventually Martha cleared her throat and glanced Sam’s way.

“So. Sam. You must enjoy working with Detective Beckett?”

Sam looked up at Martha over his fork and nodded. “Yes, I do. Kate’s a great detective.”

“She is.”
Martha regarded him for a moment. “So did you start seeing each other before or after you started working together?”

“Mother.”

“Martha.”

Both Castle and Kate flashed Martha a look, and she gave them an innocent look back. “What? I’m trying to see if there’s a pattern here, or it was simply a coincidence that they wound up working together. If it’s a pattern, you better hope she doesn’t take on another consultant.

“Grandma!”
Alexis’s eyes widened and she looked over at Sam. “I’m so sorry.”

Sam let out an awkward laugh, before nodding. “No. No it’s okay. But to answer your question, I worked with her first.”

“Pattern.”
Martha wagged her finger. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“Mother, that is enough.”
Castle looked mollified, and he started gathering plates. “I should get dessert.”

“Actually, Castle I—” She was about to try and get out of it when her phone went off. She reached for her phone, snatching it off her belt before glancing at the caller ID. “It’s Espo. Looks like a murder—gotta go.”

Sam raised his eyebrows back at her. “I … guess that’s my cue.”

“I’ll walk you two out,”
Alexis said, getting to her feet after them. They said their goodbyes, and Alexis looped her arm through Kate’s and they started walking towards the door. “I am sorry tonight was such a disaster.”

Kate shook her head. “No, it’s fine. I’m not even sure why they wanted to do all this. Martha’s never treated me like that before.”

“She just never got over the break up. She always kept hoping that you two will get back together again.”

“Tell her that trying to scare Sam off is not the answer.” She gave Alexis’s arm a squeeze before turning to face her. “And tell your father if he turns Sam into a character in his books, I’m going to stop fixing his parking tickets.”

“I will tell him.” She turned to face her again and pulled Beckett into a hug. “It was good seeing you, Kate.”

Kate wrapped her arms around Alexis tightly, returning the hug for a moment before pulling back. “You should work homicide more often. It’d be good to see you more.”

“I’ll see what I can do. But you have a murder to get to.”

“I do.” With that, she pulled away and turned back towards Sam again. They were both quiet until they reached the end of the hallway, when Sam cleared his throat as he was pressing the call button for the elevator.

“So … you were right.”

Kate glanced at him with an amused look, before raising an eyebrow. “Right about what?”

“This was a bad idea.”

“Told you so.”
