[She hesitates for a moment, considering before nodding slowly. Okay. She could do story time.]

I've got some time. But if I'm going to be telling stories, we're trading - one of mine for one of yours.

[ He considers that for a second, but only a second. It seems he's in the storytelling mood. ]

It's a deal. But you go first, because once I start you'll have trouble shutting me up.

Alright, fair enough.

[There's a beat.]

So me and a few other knights were sent on a mission to Rome. There were a series of fires that the Italian police wanted us to look into.

[ The Doctor is not unlike a child. He'd sit on the floor and cross his legs under him if it didn't look entirely weird ]

I once saw a fire in Rome. Big one. Entirely not my fault. Much.

[Her eyebrows go up a bit at that. That's one of those stories you better tell her, Doctor.]

Well, we when we got there and looked at the video feed, it turns out the fires were being started by a person, but they were being supplemented by a person made of fire.

Made of fire? Blimey. I bet he knows how to heat up a party, eh? Eh!

[ He grins, obviously thinking he's hilarious. ]

So what happened next?

We started investigating and found out that the fires were connected to a local mob that was working the area. We dug into it a little further and figure out the exact arsonist and what he was intending to be his next target.

[ He's enthralled now, back bent a little as he listens, hands clasped in front of him. ]

And what was it? The next target?

A giant chemical plant.

[Her face indicates just how she felt about that particular bit of information.]

We pretty much had to rush to get there before he set the place on fire because Rome really didn't need a chemical explosion at that point in time, never mind the ghost setting it off for him trying to get it's revenge.

Yes well Rome probably doesn't really need a chemical explosion on any day, does it? But blimey, ghosts and people made of fire. Sounds like my sort of day!

[She laughs.]

It was definitely exciting, that's for sure. We didn't stop the explosion, but we did stop the ghost, and turned the arsonist into the proper authorities.

Sounds like my sort of day. Or the sort of day I used to have. I've been a bit lacking in those things recently. Sort of trying to get back on track, if you know what I mean.

Well, this was probably a good start. Doesn't get more ... active than giant spiders.

[ His face falls, suddenly looking more than a touch disappointed. ]

Doesn't it?

[Her eyebrows go up a bit at that.]

I ... don't know? This is definitely my craziest mission to date.

Well there's always room for more I suppose. Don't lose hope! [ Not that she had, but then you never do know, do you? ]

[She laughs a bit at that before nodding.]

I will do my best to keep my spirits up.

[it's the least she could do, at the Doctor's request.]

You'd better! I'll be watching out for you. [ He's mostly teasing, but means it to a point. He'll look out for her. ]

We'll look out for each other.

[Because that's what friends do, and Kate figures she's known the Doctor long enough to consider him a friend.]

Yes I like the sound of that.

[ He smiles, properly, warmly. Having a friend is always a good thing, he knows that more than most. ]

You know where I am if you need me.

[She nods in agreement.]

Same here.

[Then she'll nod back to the kids.]

I'll let you get back to your captive audience.

[ He fires off a quick salute and grins ]

I'll see you around, Kate.

[ And then he'll prepare to get another story going, because oh is he full of those. ]

[It's a good question. Even though Kate already has an answer she takes her time before responding.]

It's what I'm good at. It's what I know how to do. So if you will still have me, then I'd like to stay.

You didn't think I was going to say no, did you?

[She laughs.]

Honestly? No. But I wasn't going to count my chickens just in case.

It does beg the question: what section have you been thinking about joining?

Good question.

[Because she's not really sure.]

I'm not really sure where I'd ... fit best. Light and Fire are out for obvious reasons, and I'm not really a researcher type. You guys don't really have a sect for police work.

Not exactly, no. Do you really think of yourself as combat-oriented?

[She pauses, before shaking her head.]

I can fight, but it's not my main skill set.

Well, there's always being a freelancer. Having a special skill set that doesn't fit in anywhere else.

[She considers for a moment, before nodding.]

That would probably be the best choice. I don't really think I fit anywhere else.

You'd report directly to Wynn, but beyond that, be more or less on your own inside the castle, to do as you please.

[She pauses, considering that for a moment before nodding.]

I'm good with that. I've always been self-motivated anyway.

Then I suppose that settles that. I'll talk to Wynn as soon as I can.

Great.

[she takes a breath before glancing over with a smile.]

Thank you. For everything, really.

You got yourself to this point. You don't have to thank me for it.

Still - I appreciate the support.

[A good mentor is always something worth having, in her opinion.]

Well, you'll still have that. Friends?

[She nods a bit in return.]

Friends.

[and she'll start to step away.]

I'll see you around?

At your ceremony, if not before.

Good.

[And with that, she will head off to get back to work. /scene]

[Kate laughs with a small nod.]

Mission accomplished. Everyone goes home.

[Well, almost everyone. Some not as peacefully as others.]

Eventually. [Seeing as they'll be here for a while.] Scored a decent bed here at least... though I probably would have been better off staying elsewhere. [She pauses a moment, then explains.] Dimitris had a bit of a ghost problem.

[Her eyebrows go up a bit.]

That's becoming a bit of a trend for you. It didn't set people on fire, did it?

No, but it hurt like a bitch... [And well... aged her four years though Rose doesn't spend enough time looking in a mirror to really notice any major change in her appearance.]

Just as hard to kill as well.

[She nods a bit at that.]

I can imagine. It's not really something you can shoot.

Not when you're trying not to get caught. [Though that hadn't stopped Will. Whoops?!] Lucky for us the Guards weren't big fans of ghosts either.

I can't imagine they would be, if they actually had to live with the thing. Self-preservation can get to be a pretty strong instinct after a while.
